BENTONVILLE, Ark. - It looked like a crime scene, but no charges will be filed after Wayne Goldsberry killed a buck with his bare hands in his daughter's bedroom.

The engagement lasted an exhausting 40 minutes, but Goldsberry finally subdued the five-point whitetail deer that crashed through a bedroom window at his daughter's home Friday. When it was over, blood splattered the walls and the deer lay on the bedroom floor, its neck broken.

Goldsberry was at his daughter's home when he heard glass breaking. He went back to check on the noise and found the deer.

"I was standing about like this peeking around the corner when the deer came out of the bedroom," said Goldsberry, demonstrating while peering around his kitchen wall. The deer ran down the hall and into the master bedroom "jumping back and forth across the bed."

"I could tell he was really tearing up the place back there," Goldsberry said.

Goldsberry entered the bedroom to confront the deer and, after a brief struggle, emerged to tell his wife to call police. After returning to the bedroom, the fight continued. Goldsberry finally was able to grip the animal and twist its neck, killing it.

"He was trying to get up a corner wall and I just came in behind him and grabbed him by the horns and just started pushing down," said Goldsberry.

Goldsberry, sore from the struggle, dragged the dead animal out of the house.

"He got kicked several times. He was walking bowlegged for awhile," Deputy Doug Gay said.

Benton County Sheriff Keith Ferguson said that when he arrived he found the deer dead in the front yard. Goldsberry intended to have the deer processed for its meat.

Gay said that, this time of year, bucks that see their reflection in windows often charge them, believing the mirror image to be a rival.

What's triggering a shortage of guns?

Whether shopping online, at Wal-Mart or local sporting goods stores, gun enthusiasts continue to forage for .45-caliber bullets, handguns and tactical rifles -- fallout from what some would say has been a perfect storm of economic and political change over the past 10 months, fueled by fear.

"Three main elements that have been behind this are the potential for pending legislation on the federal level, a federal administration that doesn't have any regard for the rights of individuals, and just a general sense of uncertainty," said Paul Gauffin, of State Line Gun Shop in Mason.

"There's a lot of anxiety in society today caused by the economy and the unstable job market, and a lot of political turbulence. Couple all those factors and it creates a climate that makes people want to dig in -- and part of that urge is hoarding ammunition," Gauffin said.

At Al's Gun & Reel Shop in Derry, owner Theresa Bacon said that from a business standpoint, it's frustrating.

"I have three particular revolvers on order with Smith & Wesson since July. I've got the deposits, but I can't get the merchandise. They tell us they are way behind in production," Bacon said. "I don't know how far behind they are, but Kimber (a gun manufacturer) told us they are 200,000 guns behind."

The surge in gun sales, which spiked around November of last year, has created scarcity of trickle-down proportions, leaving consumers high and dry. Certain items, like pistols and tactical rifles -- also known as "home defense" guns -- are still nearly impossible to get, said Bacon.

Most recent industry statistics show that, while the trend is leveling out, demand still far exceeds supply.

"Even black powder and other supplies are scarce. And when we finally do get them, the price goes up. We are constantly price-checking to make sure we're not under pricing ourselves," Bacon said. "But then I have to deal with cranky customers who can't get what they want, and don't want to pay more for what they can."

Jeff Kasprzyk of Derry, a regular at Bacon's shop, admits he has been hoarding ammunition for years.

"People have stockpiles, that's part of the problem. I moved up here from Massachusetts, and I was feeling the infringement coming from a Democratic state. Now that I'm getting back into sports shooting, I guess I'm about to find out how hard it is to find certain ammunition," Kasprzyk said.

Conservative gun owners like Kasprzyk say they continue to feel threatened by liberal lawmakers who they believe have their sights set on eroding existing gun ownership rights.

State Sen. Robert Letourneau, R-Derry, said that was what he was hearing around this time last year from many of his constituents. With a new legislative session looming, he's still waiting to see what's in the pipeline.

"There is some negative legislation that has been filed this year. All we can see right now are the titles, but a number have been filed here in the House that I'd consider anti-gun," Letourneau said.

Letourneau said other changes in the past year have contributed to ammunition shortages, including a directive in March from the Department of Defense to discontinue its recycling of brass from spent ammunition. Instead of reloading the casings for resale to the public, the metal is now scrapped.

Of even greater concern to gun owners would be legislation from Washington that could reinforce long-feared reforms, including federal reinstatement of the ban on some semiautomatic rifles and increases in federal excise taxes on ammunition.

As hunting season begins, Gauffin said hunters are about the only ones immune from the shortages.

His Mason gun shop shelves are stocked with most of the larger game rifle calibers. "They're available, albeit not plentiful. But there's enough to go around. It's pistol and military style ammo that's hard to find," Gauffin said.

And that threatens other gun-related businesses. An employee of Firing Line Target Range in Manchester said right now they have no 380- or 45-caliber, or 30 carbine ammo for target shooting.

"Carbine, used in World War II, used to be cheap to shoot. Now we can't get it," he said. "And if we don't have bullets, we're out of business."

Using a deer hunter helps restore health and safety

With the fall deer hunting season opening on Sept. 15, Redding is again joining with other communities to help control overabundant deer in our region by inviting licensed hunters to evaluate properties for possible deer culling.

A major concern caused by the densely populated deer herd in Fairfield County is Lyme and other infectious diseases spread by deer ticks, which breed almost exclusively on white-tailed deer. Ticks dependence on deer is so great that when deer herds are thinned sufficiently, tick populations fall dramatically. This has been demonstrated in the published study of the community of Mumford Cove, Groton, Conn., where Lyme cases fell from 30 new cases a year to less than three cases a year and have been held at that low level for more than eight years now.

Collisions between deer and vehicles present another unnecessary year-round hazard. This summer a Connecticut man died after colliding with a deer on the road, and a serious tractor trailer accident caused by two deer in Newtown caused massive destruction to the Interstate 84 exit there. In a typical year, the Redding Police record 100 strikes between deer and vehicles.

A third concern, overforaging by deer, causes extensive damage to our woodlands and landscaping, reducing habitat for birds. The damage to the shrub layer has secondary effects such as increasing erosion and storm water runoff and degrading water quality.

If our deer populations can be returned to the levels of 50 years ago, all of these problems would be minimized. Efforts to reduce wild, mainland deer populations with contraception have all failed and the only effective means of reduction remains planned hunting.

Annual controlled deer hunts on larger town tracts now occur in many local municipalities. However, they are not enough to control the prolific deer populations on a townwide basis. A typical doe will produce two offspring per season for 12 years, so without natural predators, deer populations may double every two years. Denise Savageau and Patricia Sesto, co-chairs of the Fairfield County Municipal Deer Management Alliance, urge local landowners with some tree cover to join in the community effort and engage hunters on behalf of the common good. Without this help, they agree that deer cannot be brought back to acceptable levels.

Some people assume that fencing and garden sprays suffice, but such methods simply move the deer problem elsewhere, where they continue to allow ticks to breed, and damage the natural areas in our towns.

The bow hunting season in Fairfield and New Haven counties begins on Sept. 15. Since these counties are the most seriously affected areas in the state, the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection extended the deer control season here until Jan. 31.

Many surveys over recent years, including in Greenwich, New Canaan, Darien, Wilton and Redding, reveal that most people in this area are only too aware of these concerns, and do not object to hunters controlling the herd.

Here are some basic hunting guidelines for property owners: There is no minimum acreage required for bow hunting or for shotguns and muzzleloaders; however, firearms may not be used within 500 feet of any habitation, and rifle use requires a minimum of 10 acres. Consequently, most properties in Redding rely upon bow hunting, usually from an elevated tree stand, using bait to bring the deer to a safe location directly beneath the archer.

Where the opportunity exists, neighbors should work together to facilitate more effective hunting. Municipalities and homeowner associations may even apply to the DEP for a special permit to remove deer after normal sport hunting seasons and times. Property owners can impose rules in addition to the state regulations regarding how and when you wish the hunting to take place. Licensed, experienced hunters may be found through a new resident-run program called BeSafeRedding.org that matches private homeowners with experienced hunters and aims, with sufficient landowner participation, to reduce deer populations townwide to Lyme-ending levels. Reddings town controller collects donations at town hall for butchering costs so venison may go to food pantries.

AS the sun rises or sets during hunting season, Doug Erickson pulls up to a secluded driveway, puts on his camouflage suit and climbs a maple tree to wait, with binoculars, five arrows and plenty of patience, for a doe to approach.

The woods belong to a private owner, one of seven who allow Mr. Erickson, 41, the president of the Westchester County Bowhunters Association, access to their land each winter. Several have contacted his group in the last few years, hoping a few well-aimed arrows at mature female deer will help reduce the herds that destroy their lawns, run in front of their cars and spread Lyme disease by carrying ticks.

As a kid, it was a big deal when you saw a deer, but now theyre all over the place, said Peter Vogel, 38, who recently gave Mr. Erickson access to his six-acre Pound Ridge property. They dont appear to be that fearful of anyone; you can almost walk up to them and touch them before they finally start to move away.

The regions booming white-tailed deer population, which experts say is more than five times what can be sustained, has prompted county officials to consider allowing some bowhunting at public parks when the season resumes in October. There is no deer population estimate countywide, but at the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, the countys largest park at 4,315 acres, wildlife analysts last April recorded a density of 63.7 deer per square mile, though ecologically viable levels there would be 5 to 10 deer per square mile.

In 2006, two years after Westchesters deer hunting season expanded to 10 weeks from 8, County Executive Andrew J. Spano charged a task force of 20 environmentalists and wildlife experts with coming up with recommendations for addressing the deer population.

After reviewing numerous studies and struggling to reach a consensus, the group submitted a report in November proposing that some public forests be opened to hunters on a trial basis.

One task force member, Laura Simon, the urban wildlife director for the Humane Society of the United States, opposed the hunting recommendation and submitted her own report arguing for further study and alternative population-control methods.

Mr. Spano values Ms. Simons continued input, but birth control, sterilization and other options would cost much more and could take years to make an impact, said Susan Tolchin, the county executives chief adviser.

We feel that we need to do something now because whats happening in our parks is so destructive that we really cant wait, Ms. Tolchin said. If you look in our parks, you can literally see the differences in the foliage, where it disappears in the areas where the deer can get to them. Were really concerned.

For the next few months, Westchesters Parks, Recreation and Conservation Department will discuss how to regulate hunting access and monitor the impact on the herds and vegetation.

Beth Herr, a task force member and program administrator in the parks department, said that when the season resumes on Oct. 17, some bowhunting will probably be allowed at the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, which has the most recorded information about foliage conditions to use as a comparison.

We need to go slowly, and we need to learn from what we do, Ms. Herr said.

In addition to reducing grazing, bowhunting also provides the county with a reliable source of meat for the Food Bank for Westchester, donated through the local chapter of Hunters Feeding the Hungry.

Christina Rohatynskyj, the food banks executive director, said the 25,000 pounds of venison received last year helped the organization provide high-protein, low-fat nutrition for the countys food pantries, shelters and soup kitchens. As other donations decreased last year, the stewed and chopped deer meat held steady, she said.

The bowhunters are really doing a good deed for the community, she said. They harvest the deer to keep the population manageable, and what they do not use for themselves they donate so that others may eat. Its a good deal all around.

But county officials in favor of creating public hunting opportunities have to contend with doubts about public safety and complaints from residents and animal rights activists opposed to killing deer.

The safety concern is a moot point, Mr. Erickson said, given that Westchester allows hunting only with bows, not guns. The State Department of Environmental Conservation, which monitors hunting safety, has no fatal bowhunting accidents on record, going back to 1989.

Mr. Vogel said that regardless of what the county decides about opening the Ward Pound Ridge Reservation to bowhunters this year, he would probably invite Mr. Erickson to use his land again.

Im going to continue to monitor what the town and what the area and people are thinking, Mr. Vogel said. But theres nothing negative that came out of it.
